This is the second weekend in a row that this problem has happened. I have a 2009 Altima 3.5 SE standard transmission.

You are watching: 2009 nissan altima wont start yellow key light

I get into the car and a yellow key light appears on the dash and the push to start button displays 'lock'. Usually the dash display shows the instructions on how to start the car ('clutch' and the push to start button). This is not displayed.

Last Saturday when this happened I was not at home and called a tow truck. When it showed up 3 hours later, the car started and I was able to drive it home and all this week without any problem.

Today, I got into my car in my driveway and the same thing happened. It's been about an hour and it hasn't started.

Does anyone know what the hell is going on? I called my family's mechanic and he didn't really know what to say other than my key fob might have lost its memory. Since I was able to start it last Saturday I'm ruling that out. Am I stuck with Nissan on this?

Thanks

You need to get a new steering lock control unit. It's not the key at all.

I work on them!

This x1000! I'm pretty sure there is a recall related to it.

Replace the battery in the key and see if that helps. Does the yellow key icon have a little battery underneath?

No battery underneath. I tried using the other key fob and that didn't work. Since I just replaced the batteries in one of my keys I don't think it's the issue.

I'll give it a shot tho I suppose.

I know this sounds stupid but could it be your car battery? I saw a jx35 go nuts when it's battery was dying.

This is the Nissan steering lock unit TSB. There is no recal, and it's only under the 3/36 warranty unless you have one of the premium extended warranties. A trick that sometimes works in this situation is to loosen the "tilt-steering" and (I know this sounds neanderthal) you violently slam the steering column up and down to jar the steering lock unit's damaged circuit. If you can move your steering wheel and the key light is not red but the car won't turn to the "on" position, The Steering lock unit is certainly your issue. The TSB applies to the

If you are fortunate to have a GT-R or Z, the recal for those is '09-10 Z's and '09-'11 GT-R's. They have the lock unit updated regardless of this issue having arisen.

Thanks.

I actually got this fixed yesterday. The steering lock column is under warranty since Nissan extended the standard 3/36 to 6/unlimited in Arpil.

It didn't cost me anything and the dealership had it done in 4 hours.
